Terms & Conditions

The terms of participation, partnership, and use.

LAST UPDATED   May 11, 2026    EFFECTIVE   May 11, 2026   GOVERNING LAW   State of Illinois

Youth Sports Science Institute ("YSSI," "we," "our") operates programs, partnerships, and digital platforms that introduce young people to careers in data analytics, technology, and health science through sport. These Terms govern how participants, families, partners, and visitors engage with us.

01.  Acceptance of Terms

By accessing this website, enrolling in a YSSI program, or partnering with us in any capacity, you agree to these Terms and Conditions. If you do not agree, please do not use the site or participate in our programming.

If you are enrolling a minor, you accept these Terms on their behalf as their parent or legal guardian.

02.  About YSSI

Youth Sports Science Institute is a Chicago-based nonprofit organization. We use sport as a live learning platform to teach data science, technology, kinesiology, and health science to youth. Our work is delivered through schools, community partners, hospitals, universities, and corporate sponsors.

Program offerings, partners, locations, and instructors are subject to change. Confirmed details are communicated at the time of enrollment.

03.  Eligibility & Consent

YSSI programs are designed for youth participants, typically between the ages of 11 and 19. Specific age and grade requirements vary by program and are listed at registration.

Participants under 18 require enrollment by a parent or legal guardian. By enrolling a minor, the parent or guardian represents that they:

  • Have legal authority to consent on the minor’s behalf.

  • Agree to all terms, releases, and waivers presented during registration.

  • Will provide accurate emergency contact and medical information.

04.  Registration & Enrollment

Enrollment is confirmed only after a participant completes the required registration steps, including signed waivers, submitted forms, and (where applicable) payment.

YSSI reserves the right to decline, suspend, or terminate enrollment at our discretion, including for misrepresentation of information, conduct concerns, or capacity limits.

05.  Code of Conduct

All participants, families, staff, and partners are expected to engage with respect, integrity, and a commitment to learning. The following are prohibited in all YSSI spaces — physical and digital:

  • Harassment, bullying, intimidation, or discrimination of any kind.

  • Violence, threats, or destruction of property.

  • Possession of weapons, illegal substances, alcohol, or tobacco products.

  • Misuse of YSSI technology, equipment, or facilities.

  • Sharing of confidential program materials outside the participant cohort.

Violations may result in removal from a program without refund and, where appropriate, escalation to school administrators, partners, or law enforcement.

06.  Health, Safety & Assumption of Risk

YSSI programs may involve physical activity, athletic training, virtual reality equipment, and the use of digital and laboratory tools. While we take reasonable measures to ensure participant safety, all activities carry inherent risks.

By enrolling, participants and guardians acknowledge these risks and agree to:

  • Disclose any relevant medical conditions, allergies, or physical limitations at registration.

  • Follow all safety instructions provided by YSSI staff and partner organizations.

  • Authorize emergency medical care if a participant is unable to give consent and a guardian cannot be reached.

IMPORTANT   YSSI is not a medical provider. Information shared during programming — including injury prevention training delivered through partners such as Lurie Children’s Hospital — is educational and does not replace clinical care or medical advice.

07.  Media & Likeness

YSSI may photograph, film, or record participants during programming for educational, promotional, and reporting purposes. By enrolling, participants and guardians grant YSSI a non-exclusive, royalty-free license to use this media in connection with our mission.

Guardians may opt out of public-facing media use by submitting a written request to info@yssi.org prior to or during enrollment. Opt-outs apply prospectively and do not affect already-published materials.

08.  Payment & Refunds

Some YSSI programs are offered at no cost through grant funding or partner sponsorship. Others involve participant or institutional fees, which are disclosed at registration.

REFUND POLICY

  • Full refunds are available for cancellations made at least 14 days before a program’s start date.

  • Partial refunds may be available within 14 days of the start date, at YSSI’s discretion.

  • No refunds are issued once a program has begun, except in cases of program cancellation by YSSI.

If YSSI cancels a program, participants will receive a full refund or the option to transfer enrollment to a comparable offering.

09.  Intellectual Property

All content on this website and within YSSI programming — including curriculum, written materials, datasets, code samples, branding, logos, and instructional videos — is the property of YSSI or its licensors and is protected by U.S. and international intellectual property laws.

Participants may use program materials for their personal learning and portfolio. Commercial use, redistribution, or republication without written permission is prohibited.

Work created by participants during a program (e.g., dashboards, code, presentations) belongs to the participant, with YSSI retaining a non-exclusive license to display, reference, and reproduce that work for educational and promotional purposes.

10.  Privacy

YSSI is committed to protecting participant privacy, particularly for minors. Our handling of personal information, including data collected through digital tools and program platforms, is described in our Privacy Policy.

We comply with applicable laws including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) where relevant to our programming.

11.  Liability & Disclaimers

YSSI provides its programs and website on an "as is" and "as available" basis. To the fullest extent permitted by law, YSSI disclaims all warranties, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement.

YSSI is not liable for indirect, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages arising from program participation or use of our website, except where such limitations are prohibited by law.

Information shared on this site is for general educational purposes and should not be relied upon as legal, medical, financial, or professional advice.

12.  Indemnification

Participants and guardians agree to indemnify and hold harmless YSSI, its staff, board, partners, sponsors, and affiliates from any claims, damages, or expenses arising out of program participation, breach of these Terms, or violation of any third-party rights.

13.  Changes to These Terms

YSSI may update these Terms periodically. The "Last Updated" date at the top of this document reflects the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated to active participants and partners. Continued use of our site or programs after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised Terms.

14.  Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, without regard to its conflict of laws principles. Any disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Cook County, Illinois.
